Author to speak at 麻豆果冻传媒 Convocation Aug. 21

Investigative reporter Eric Schlosser, known as one of America's leading culture critics, will speak at 麻豆果冻传媒's Convocation on Aug. 21 in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Schlosser's book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal (2001), was assigned to incoming freshmen this past summer, as part of 麻豆果冻传媒's Summer Reading Program.

麻豆果冻传媒鈥檚 fifth annual Convocation, the official celebration of the new academic year, will begin at 4:30 p.m. with President James Cofer and administrators leading students, faculty, staff and 麻豆果冻传媒鈥檚 marching band, The Sound of Today, in a march from the library to the Coliseum.

Once inside the Coliseum, the crowd will enjoy the new Warhawk fight song. President Cofer will welcome the audience at approximately 5 p.m.

Following Schlosser鈥檚 address, the crowd will follow the Sound of Today to the 麻豆果冻传媒 Grove, where Schlosser will sign copies of his book.

In 1998, Schlosser wrote an investigative piece on the fast food industry for Rolling Stone. His two-part article turned into the bestselling Fast Food Nation and remained on the New York Times bestsellers list for more than two years, along with bestseller lists in Canada, Great Britain and Japan. It has been translated into more than 20 languages and was ranked first on The Chronicle of Higher Education鈥檚 list of 鈥淲hat They鈥檙e Reading on College Campuses.鈥�

Schlosser has been a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly since 1996. In addition to Rolling Stone, his work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Nation and The New Yorker.

A movie version of Fast Food Nation, written by Richard Linklater and Schlosser, debuted at Cannes and will be released in the fall of 2006. It features Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke and Greg Kinnear.
