麻豆果冻传媒 student receives distinguished oceanic and atmospheric science scholarship

麻豆果冻传媒 student Stephanie Ann Mullins received one of 101 Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships in July.

The undergraduate scholarships, up to $8,000 each, were given to full-time students from accredited colleges and universities for the 2006-2007 academic year.

鈥淚鈥檓 incredibly honored,鈥� Mullins said. 鈥淪tudying the weather, especially hurricanes, has fascinated me since I was a very small child. I want to learn as much as possible about hurricanes to help efforts to lessen their damage鈥攂oth economic and emotional.鈥�

Mullins intends to study meteorology in graduate school with the eventual goal of becoming a tropical research meteorologist.

The purpose of the annual Hollings Scholarship Program is to increase public understanding while recruiting and preparing students for careers in public service or involving teaching and educating in oceanic and atmospheric science. The junior and senior students must be interested in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education.

Students are required to participate in a 10-week summer internship and attend the Hollings Scholarship Program conference upon completion.

The program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) on behalf of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The scholarships are awarded in honor of Senator Hollings (South Carolina-D), who championed the creation of the NOAA and was a vocal ocean advocate during his 36 years in Congress.
