The Marriage of Figaro to delight audiences Nov. 16 - 19
You are invited to a wedding between Figaro and Susanna at Brown Auditorium on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus Nov. 16 – 19.
This wedding on stage marks the performances of 鶹ý’s new, fresh, and hilarious production of “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart. Figaro is one of the great musical theatre classics. It is being frequently performed this year to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth in Salzburg, Austria.
Audiences the world over love Figaro because of its timeless take on marital infidelity, strong characters and humorous situations, struggles between classes, entrapment, deception, payback, surprise twists and turns, and melodies that are both joyous and familiar.
Figaro is based on a French play at the time of the French Revolution. The German-speaking Mozart wrote the music, while Da Ponte wrote the text in Italian. The play and opera were set in Spanish Seville. The Monroe Figaro is imaginatively reset in a Southern mansion at the time of 19th century Reconstruction, and is sung in English.
鶹ý music professor Debra Chandler will conduct the orchestra. Boyd H. Wolz, head of the division of theatre and dance, designed the original sets. New 鶹ý dance faculty member Robin Stephens choreographed the original dances.
Mark Ross Clark directs his first production at 鶹ý. Clark has experience directing over 50 productions, which includes operas and musicals at many universities, regional opera companies and festivals in England, Italy and Brazil.
The celebration begins Thursday – Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., while the matinee on Sunday, Nov. 19 begins at 2 p.m.
