Political science major lands internship

Hannah Hammons, a 鶹ý senior majoring in political science, was recently selected to participate in The Louisiana Center for Women and Government as a summer intern.

The internship will involve work at a governmental office in Baton Rouge and class on Fridays at Nicholls State University. This program was established in 1990 to help encourage the future leadership of women by preparing them for public service through nonpartisan provision and support of education. As part of the center’s mission, it develops programs to make women more generally aware of the governmental process while urging them to participate actively in an ongoing basis.

Hammons said, “It is an honor to be chosen for one of the five interns this summer.”

John W. Sutherlin, assistant professor of political science, has been active in assisting students with internships since coming to 鶹ý in 2005. Political science majors have been placed in campaign offices, mayoral departments and academic centers.

“So far almost half of the political science majors have been granted paid internships or received academic credit for their work. I am very proud of all of them,” he said. He also noted how important it was for his female students to engage in the political process and gain direct experience.

“It is one thing to read about government in action, and it is another thing to actually be a part of that process,” Hammons added.

Last year, Jessica Lenard was the first 鶹ý student to ever participate in the center’s program.
