Hanser attends National Gang Crime Research Center annual conference

During the month of August, Rob Hanser, assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, attended the 10th annual conference of the National Gang Crime Research Center in Chicago, Ill.

While attending the conference, Hanser presented a paper entitled "Collaborative Protocols for Information Sharing between Correctional and Law Enforcement Agencies: Post-Katrina Lessons Learned in Louisiana." The paper provided insight on many of the multi-agency cooperative efforts that occurred as a result of Hurricane Katrina, highlighting the impact that Katrina had on both prison and street gang activity in Louisiana and Texas.

Also at the conference, Hanser attended several days of intensive training in interview and interrogation techniques used with gang-related offenders. He likewise obtained certification as a gang specialist with training emphases in both gang counseling techniques and interview/interrogation skills. This training augments his prior experience with gang-related offenders in the Texas prison system, where he had extensive day-to-day contact with inmate members of the Mexican Mafia, the Texas Syndicate, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Bloods, and the Crips that were held in the administrative segregation department of the Eastham Prison Unit.

In addition, Hanser worked as a therapist intern and provided counseling services to numerous gang-related youth in the Houston area. His recent training at the National Gang Crime Research Center has helped to refine and credentialize his combined experience related to gang offenders.
