鶹ý alumnus Matthew Witherow making an impression in the music/military world

University of Louisiana at Monroe alumnus Matthew William Witherow (bachelor’s degree in music—piano performance), ’07, of Pollock is busy making his mark in the world, both musically and as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Most recently, he was the winner of a $2,000 military scholarship, the “Lucile Parrish Ward Veterans Award,” from the National Federation of Music Clubs in 2007. Upon invitation, Witherow performed a partial solo recital at the NFMC’s Biennial Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June.

Witherow won numerous 鶹ý honors and awards during his time at 鶹ý, including the Florence Ziegler Allbritton Award, the Clara Freiberg Memorial Scholarship, and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Senior Award within the Division of Music in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. He was a student of Richard Seiler, 鶹ý associate professor of music (piano) and keyboard chair.

During his undergraduate studies and at the age of twenty, Witherow enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps, choosing to enter infantry as his military occupational specialty. During his six-year enlistment, he has been deployed twice. His first assignment was to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and the second was to Iraq.
