麻豆果冻传媒 health studies students plant garden at Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home

For the third consecutive year, University of Louisiana at Monroe students of health studies participated in a service-learning project in Dr. Paula Griswold's social epidemiology class.

Together, students planted a garden at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home in Monroe.

This service-learning project allowed students to act upon the knowledge learned in the classroom and gain real-world experience, said Paula Griswold, ULM Assistant Professor of Health Studies.

She said, "The interaction between the students and the veterans helps facilitate a better knowledge of nutrition, the environment, senior health, and the social needs within the community. This project allows students to actually see first-hand what they've been learning in class."

These students continue to cultivate their relationships with the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home through this horticulture project and through spending time with the veterans housed there.

Griswold hopes that she has planted in her students the importance of service to the community.

This project was funded by a grant from Communities Acting to Benefit Louisiana's Elderly.
