鶹ý hosts Second Annual School Law Conference April 30
The University of Louisiana at Monroe will host the Second Annual School Law Conference from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 30 in the Student Union Building second floor ballrooms.
“The conference gives teachers and administrators the opportunity to interact with others in their field while gaining valuable information on legal issues affecting elementary and secondary education,” said Dr. Wayne Brumfield, Vice President for Student Affairs.
Conference fees are $175 per person and $200 after April 20.
The conference is geared toward attorneys, school board members, school administrators, central office staff, or those interested in the legal issues affecting K-12 education in Louisiana.
Topics for the conference include the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act (IDEA), guns in schools, sexual harassment in the workplace, and Legislative Act 1.
The itinerary includes speakers and presentations from law professionals from across the state including John Church, William Corbett, Ty Manieri II, Nathan Roberts, and keynote speaker, Judge Alvin R. Sharp.
Sharp—a Louisiana 4th Judicial District Court Judge—has written many pieces relating to trial techniques, evidence, civil procedure, family law, and litigation in general and has authored several textbooks which are used in major universities in Louisiana and Georgia.
He is a former federal judicial law clerk, a past litigator for the Indigent Defender Board, a former Monroe City Prosecutor, Monroe City Attorney, general counsel for the Monroe City School Board, and member of Sharp & Sharp, Attorneys at Law. Sharp currently serves Ouachita and Morehouse parishes.
A panel discussion will also be held, featuring Colonel Mike Edmonson, Ouachita Parish Sheriff Jay Russell, James Spruel Jr., and Moderator Troy Humphrey.
Continuing education credits will be offered to attorneys, school board members, and school administrators.
Registrants may pay online, by mail, or the day of the conference.
