鶹ý Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta sponsors high school essay contest for Ouachita Parish

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Beta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta—the International English Honor Society—is sponsoring a high school writing competition for high school students throughout Ouachita Parish. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, Feb. 21.

The contest is open to all high school students within the parish, including students in Ouachita Parish Schools, Monroe City Schools, and those attending private schools.

The goal of the competition is to help students develop their writing skills and cultivate a high regard for the English language.

To enter, students must submit an essay, poem, or short story in response to one of three selections from “Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader,” a collection of essays by Anne Fadiman.

Student members of 鶹ý’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta will judge submissions and award first, second, and third place monetary prizes.

Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 5:30 p.m., in 鶹ý’s Col. William T. Hemphill Auditorium.

Members of Sigma Tau Delta dedicate themselves to promoting literacy, serving the community, and valuing high achievement in English studies, while fostering all that accompanies the study of English. By reaching out to local secondary schools, Sigma Tau Delta hopes to encourage interest in English language studies and higher education.
