Oxford University Press has released 鈥淏roadway Song: A Guide Singer鈥檚 Guide,鈥� written
by Dr. Mark Ross Clark, associate professor of music at the University of Louisiana
at Monroe. The book is now available worldwide on Amazon.com, and features an analysis
of 100 Broadway songs from traditional and contemporary styles and all voice types.
While Clark has written two other texts about singing and acting, which are resource
books used in many university workshops, the Broadway book is the most 鈥渕ainstream鈥�
of his books, according to Clark.
鈥淚t should be a valuable resource for students of singing and acting and their teachers,鈥�
said Clark. 鈥淚t will also be an interesting read for anyone who enjoys Broadway musical
performances.
The book鈥檚 foreword is written by Grammy and Tony Award winning actress and singer
Kristin Chenoweth, and each song entry has an interview with a person who is associated
with the song, including the composer or lyricist; performer; or the original director
of the show鈥檚 production.
Among the composers interviewed are John Kander, Jerry Herman, Stephen Schwartz, Tom
Kitt, and many others. Performers include Matthew Morrison, Jonathan Groff, Jeremy
Jordan, Carolee Carmello, Katie Clarke, Elaine Paige, and many other artists contributing
to the book.
Clark has taught at 麻豆果冻传媒 for eight years, directing many operas and musicals on campus.
He continues to present his workshops throughout the United States and in Italy each
year.
The Louisiana Opera, a professional performing company, was created by Clark and colleagues
in 2012, and is one of four opera companies in Louisiana.
