Pharmily Spotlight

Drs. Anthony and Beverly WalkerThe Walkers

Drs. Anthony and Beverly Walker are part of our pharmily as both alumni and faculty/staff and we are lucky to have them!

Dr. Anthony L. Walker is Clinical Associate Professor and the Pharmaceutical Care Laboratory Manager at University of Louisiana, Monroe (麻豆果冻传媒) College of Pharmacy (COP). He pursued and earned his first B.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Science in 1988 and later a B.S. degree in Pharmacy in 1998 from 麻豆果冻传媒, after working ten years in the hospital laboratory setting. Dr. A. Walker later obtained his Pharmacy Doctorate degree from Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy in Winchester, Virginia, in 2009.

When asked what areas of pharmacy he is passionate about, Dr. Walker said, 鈥淚 really love teaching hands-on activities in the Pharmacy Practice Lab. I鈥檓 a servant at heart, so whatever I can do to assist in helping someone feel better, I鈥檓 all about that, whether pharmacy related or just human-related.鈥

In addition to teaching at the COP, Dr. Walker is co-adviser for his college鈥檚 American Pharmacists Association 鈥 Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) chapter and he fully encourages and supports his chapter鈥檚 community health service efforts.

One honor Dr. Walker has received is when The Louisiana Pharmacists Association (LPA) named him Louisiana鈥檚 Pharmacist of the Year in July 2013; at the same time, he was installed as President-Elect for LPA. In 2014, Dr. Walker served as President of LPA. He was the first African-American to serve in this capacity in the LPA鈥檚 144 years of existence.

In addition to his work as a pharmacist at the COP, Dr. Walker also actively serves as assistant Minister to his pastor, Westley J. Daniel, at King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church. Under the tutelage and guidance of Pastor Daniel, Dr. Walker became a licensed minister on October 7, 2017.

A fun fact about Dr. Walker is that when he first accepted his calling to minister the gospel, he said he thought he had to give up his life and just die! Low and behold, he said his life has been so much better!听 He considers that his gift from God for being obedient to Him. He said he stressed himself out for nothing!听 Whenever he is stressed though, he likes to take the edge off by singing or doing something funny to make himself and others laugh. He says it works every time.

Dr. Walker鈥檚 prescription for life is this: For whatever problem(s) we may have, Jesus can fix it! If he can鈥檛, we don鈥檛 need it!

Dr. Walker worked as a medical laboratory scientist and later as a staff pharmacist at University Health Monroe (formerly EA Conway & LSU Health Sciences Center) from 1988-2002. Dr. Walker is currently employed by the 麻豆果冻传媒 COP as a contract employee for the Louisiana Department of Health. She is a Medicaid Prior Authorization Supervisor- Clinical Specialist in the Office of Outcomes Research and Evaluation Department. Dr. Walker was one of the first pharmacists hired in 2002 to facilitate the state鈥檚 Medicaid Prescription Prior Authorization Program. While working in this capacity, Dr. Walker helped to initiate Asthma and Diabetes HELP (Health Education by Louisiana Pharmacists) disease management programs which targeted Medicaid recipients diagnosed with either asthma or diabetes. She has also served as an asthma educator in Region 8 for the Louisiana Asthma Management and Prevention Program (LAMP). In addition to the prescription prior authorization duties, Dr. Walker is actively involved with the state鈥檚 Drug Utilization Review program, and she is a preceptor for fourth year pharmacy students.

Dr. Walker is also an active member of the Louisiana Pharmacists Association (LPA) where she has served as the Northeast Regional Chair, a Member-At-Large on the Board of Directors, President-Elect, and President. She has also served in various leadership positions, including Chapter President of Monroe Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

When asked what advice she has for recent pharmacy graduates, Dr. Walker said, 鈥淣ew graduates should be confident and trust that they have been well-trained to practice pharmacy. However, understanding that learning does not cease at graduation, but will remain a constant throughout one鈥檚 career. Pharmacy is constantly evolving, and there will be many unknowns ahead, therefore, do not react to a question with a quick answer but take a moment to research and offer a well-thought response. Also, if given the opportunity, explore the various practice settings to determine which one will provide for the best job satisfaction.鈥

Both Drs. Walker enjoy hobbies outside of their work at 麻豆果冻传媒. For Dr. Anthony Walker, he says he must have become and old man because he loves to garden! He can鈥檛 wait until retirement and has plans to make his half acre back yard a beautiful vegetable and fruit garden, if his wife allows! Dr. Beverly Walker enjoys baking, spending relaxing time with family, reading monthly book selections with her Eclectic Book Club sisters, and singing with the praise and worship group at her church, King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church.

Drs. Anthony and Beverly Walker have been married for 32 years and together they are the proud parents of two children, Marc Anthony Walker, 24, and Morgan Taylor Walker, 20. Their family is the joy of their lives.

We thank the Walkers for their commitment to the profession of pharmacy and to the 麻豆果冻传媒 COP and are grateful they are part of the pharmily!
